imageSYDNEY: Competition leaders Brisbane Broncos crushed the injury-hit Newcastle Knights in Australia's National Rugby League season this weekend, as the North Queensland Cowboys downed South Sydney in an emphatic win.

The top two teams, from Queensland state, showed their class against their New South Wales opponents this weekend, with the Broncos smashing the Knights 53-0 while the Cowboys beat the Rabbitohs 44-18.

Anthony Milford and Corey Oates, both 21 years old, starred for Brisbane with three tries each, while Ben Hunt starred with one try and three try assists.

"He's a brilliant player," Brisbane's Courier Mail quoted Knights coach Nathan Brown on Milford.

"If he and Ben Hunt are there for another eight years they will have a couple of premierships I think.

"I love watching the seven and six combine like they did. They were sensational."

The Knights were dealt several injury blows from the game, starting before kick-off when captain Jeremy Smith was sidelined with a knee injury.

Newcastle's Tyler Randell, Nathan Ross and Jarrod Mullen were also felled by injury during the game.

Defending champions and second-placed North Queensland heaped misery on South Sydney, the 2014 premiers, in a win at home that saw the Rabbitohs record four losses in five games.

The Cronulla Sharks moved into third place with a 40-16 victory over the Raiders, wrecking Canberra's Ricky Stuart's 300th match as a NRL coach.

The Sharks displaced the Parramatta Eels, which beat arch rivals the Manly Sea Eagles 22-10 in the first game of round seven on Thursday.

The New Zealand Warriors surprised the Canterbury Bulldogs 24-20, while the Storm condemned the Wests Tigers to the club's fifth-straight loss when the Melbourne team triumphed 19-18 in a golden-point thriller.

Meanwhile, mid-table Gold Coast Titans picked up injuries in their 19-14 loss to the St George Illawarra Dragons, with Daniel Mortimer, Eddy Pettybourne and Ashley Taylor all forced from the field while Leivaha Pulu struggled on with a rib injury.

Cellar dwellers the Sydney Roosters face the Penrith Panthers on Monday night in the last game of the round.
