imageISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal Tuesday said the Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) University would be the "university of the future" because of the best academic model and faculty of international standard.

"Work is underway to operationalize it by September 2017 for which seed money of Rs 500 million has been set aside in the Public Sector Development Programme," he said.

Chairing the first meeting of steering committee of CAREC University here at Ministry of Planning and Development, he said the idea of this university was first floated in early 90s when the Central Asian states had gotten independence.

However, it fell victim to the political upheavals in Pakistan during that decade, he added.

The minister said the university had become relevant in the context of regional connectivity and integration, boosted up by China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Ahsan Iqbal advised to develop CAREC University on the lines that would produce future leaders having strong qualities.

"Such leaders should have clear regional and global perspectives, critical thinking, entrepreneurial spirit, and sense of duty towards humanity, he urged.

The minister said top five to six universities of the world would be approached to seek technical assistance for this university by entering into a strategic alliance with them.

Ahsan Iqbal pointed out ambassadors of Central Asian Republics had assured full support for this university.

He said that physical infrastructure of CAREC University would be completed on fast-track basis and reflective of regional heritage. Some 100 acre land had already been allotted to it and more land would be acquired for it, he added.
