imageA random pair of Facebook users now has only 3.57 degrees of separation between them, the world premier social network says.

According to The Independent, the impressive figure has been released as Facebook steps foot into the 12th year of its launch, and is also celebrating ‘Friends Day’.

To mark this day, the social network released an updated statistic which says the typical degree of separation between any two Facebook users is 3.57 people.

"This is a significant reflection of how closely connected the world has become," Facebook said.

"When people connect, powerful things happen and lives are changed. We see this on Facebook every day, whether it's an exchange with an old friend that brings a smile to your face or a new connection that changes your life path, or even the world."

According to Vox, FB’s claim of 3.57 degrees of separation stems from the "six degrees of separation" theory, which says that most people are six degrees of separation away from each other. That is just pick a random stranger anywhere in the country, the theory goes, and chances are you can build a chain of acquaintances between the two of you in no more than six hops.

Facebook researchers however found that an average Facebook user is just three and a half degrees of separation away from every other user, and the social network's post tells you your own distance from everyone else on the site.

FB founder Mark Zuckerberg is also 3.17 degrees of separation away from all Facebook users.
