imageKARACHI: Chairman, FPCCI Standing Committee on Gems and Jewellery Producers, Manufacturers and Exporters, Kashif-ur-Rehman has urged the Ministry of Commerce to approve and notify the proposals of gems and jewellery sector pending with it.

The recommendations were meant to remove hurdles and facilitate the production, manufacturing and trade of gems and jewellery especially the exports as there was a big potential of this sector which needed to be duly explored, he said.

Talking to APP here, Kashif-ur-Rehman said these proposals were submitted to the Federal Commerce Ministry by FPCCI Standing Committee on Gems and Jewellery, and by Gems and Jewellery Association of Pakistan.

The producers, manufacturers and traders mainly the exporters of these high value products were facing different policy and logistics problems, and they were pressing the FPCCI Standing Committee and the association to seek certain relief from the government and ensure a level-playing field for this industry, he said.

Kashif-ur-Rehman had been appointed as Chairman FPCCI Standing Committee on Gems and Jewellery, by President, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Mian Muhammad Adrees in recognition of Kashif and his family's long experience in the field of manufacturing and exploring of gems and jewellery.

FPCCI Committee's Chairman emphasized the government to provide maximum facilitation and support to the gems and jewellery industry, and make it compatible in the regional and international markets. This sector needed new machinery and equipment for modernisation and expansion. The government should allow duty free import of these besides providing soft-term easy financing for the promotion of this industry.

"Skill is available especially in Karachi, but we need government's support," Kashif remarked.

He emphasized that the government should hold single country gems and jewellery exhibitions in different countries along with ensuring participation of gems and jewellery exporters in every international trade exhibitions in the world.

On this occasion, Kashif-ur-Rehman said the Gems and Jewellery Association of Pakistan fully supported the United Business Group (UBG) in FPCCI and said UBG would sweep the coming FPCCI elections.
