KARACHI: K-Electric has expressed its interest to install a plant to generate electricity through solid waste at the Dhabeji land fill site managed by Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB).
A delegation of K- Electric comprising some of its senior officials in a meeting with SSWMB's Managing Director, Roshan Ali Shaikh here Friday said a pragmatic approach was needed to address the issue of existent power shortage.
Seeking SSWMB support, they said power generation through waste is a strategy adopted in different parts of the world as alternative energy production mode.
"It is the time that all concerned departments and organizations coordinate and cooperate with each other to overcome energy crisis affecting almost all sections of the society," said Osama Quraishi of K- Electic.
The meeting among others was also attended by Secretary of the Board, Dr Mir Nusrat Panwhar, Executive Director for Operations, Dr A.D. Sanjani, Deputy Director Ahsan Raza, Media Director, Shabbih Siddiqui and Arshad Haider alongwith some of his other colleagues from K-Electric.
SSWMB's Managing Director Roshan Ali Shaikh, appreciating the proposal said the board has constituted six update garbage transfer stations across the metropolis that besides helping it to give a clean look could be used to facilitate the much warranted power generation needs for Karachi.
He said the scheme is being further facilitated through provision for composing plants and refused disposal furnace plants.
Shaikh agreed that landfill site at Dhabeji spread over an area of 3000 acres, fast emerging as one of the country's most modern landfill cum treatment site, can be used as a spot for production of electricity.
He also mentioned that under initial scheme a mini-forest would also be developed at the site with 40 percent of Karachi waste transported here and efficiently disposed-off.
The participants of the meeting hailed measures being planned to give Karachi a green and clean look with added provision to turn it self sufficient in power generation.
