US expects 'smooth' political transition in Nepal

WASHINGTON: The United States said Monday it believes that Nepal will undergo a smooth political transition despite the resignation of the country's prime minister Jhalanath Khanal.

Khanal's resignation on Sunday plunged Nepal into a fresh political crisis with competing parties unable to implement a national peace plan or form a stable government.

However, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland played down concerns of ongoing turmoil.

"The information we have is that this resignation was expected, and we have every expectation that there will be a smooth government change in keeping with Nepal's constitution," Nuland said.
