pakKARACHI: Oh "Had there not been monsoon rains, we could have fetched hefty rates for flags specially made of paper and clothes," said Shaharyar Khan, 60, a vendor at busy Hasan Ali Affendi Road opposite Light House Market.

Talking to APP here on Friday, the shopkeepers said that they were already facing several problems to get the stuff stocked at the warehouses because of the rains.

"Our stocks will get ruined due to lack of safety measures for the monsoon season because we are already living and doing business in the area below sea level," said Aftab Khan, 40, a vendor at the same market.

He said that being at the wholesale market, not only the people from within Karachi but also from interior of Sindh province and Balochistan were buying the flags and buntings in abundance due to their cheap availability.

"As far as our 64th Independence Day celebration is concerned we are doing good business but it could not be comparable to the past years," Aftab maintained.

On visiting a chain of such shops and stalls in the market, the traders said that small flags and caps were the top sale items.

Besides individuals purchasing these items to decorate their houses on the eve of Independence Day, a big number of hawkers and retailers were seen taking stocks forward.

The people especially the children and women have flocked to the markets to purchase readymade garments with composition of white and green colours and carrying pictures of national flags and the heroes of Pakistan Movement.

The people have also decorated their vehicles with national flags.

The public as well as organisation and institutions have planned various programms and activities for the Day.
