imageLAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif on Monday said the Punjab government was taking solid measures for protecting rights of women.

Addressing a meeting at Committee Room of Civil Secretariat through video link here, he said half population of the country comprised women and protection of their rights was responsibility of the state.

He said, special centres would be set up for immediate assistance of women subjected to violence, adding that these special centres would prove to be helpful in providing justice to the victim women.

Shahbaz Sharif also gave approval to the first phase of steps regarding reforms in motor vehicles system.

The meeting decided to change the payment system of token tax and introducing dealers' vehicles registration system (DVR System) for registration of new vehicles and motorcycles.

The Chief Minister said under DVR system, registration and number plate would be issued from dealer, adding that a vigilance cell would be set up in Excise & Taxation Department.

Shahbaz Sharif said with the change of token tax system, special stickers would be issued to the vehicles on payment of token tax. He said facility of ATM and online would be provided for payment of token tax. He said ownership number plate would be issued to the owner of the vehicle, adding that number plate would also be changed on the change of ownership of the vehicle.

The Chief Minister said necessary amendments would be made in the law regarding reforms in motor vehicles system. He directed to constitute a committee for implementation on the steps of first phase of reforms and said that final recommendations should be submitted within 14 days for introducing reforms in the second phase.

Salman Sufi of Special Monitoring Unit gave a briefing with regard to reforms in motor vehicles system and eradication of violence against women.

Provincial Minister for Women Development Hameeda Waheed- ud-Din, Special Assistant Rana Maqbool Ahmed, Women Members Provincial Assembly Kiran Dar, Farhana Afzal, Dr. Aaliya Aftab, Rashida Yaqoob, Uzma Qadri, Inspector General Police, concerned Secretaries and senior officials attended the meeting.
