BERLIN: The number of people out of work in Germany rose by 238,000 to 2.875 million in May as the coronavirus pandemic further eroded the labour market in Europe's largest economy, data showed on Wednesday.

Germany's unemployment rate jumped to 6.3pc from 5.8pc the previous month in seasonally adjusted terms, the figures from the Labour Office showed.

"The labour market remains under immense pressure due to the coronavirus pandemic," Labour Office head Detlef Scheele said. But he added that unemployment did not rise as much as in April.
