ISLAMABAD: More than 100 workshops all are engaged in certifying vehicles with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) over the country.
These Centres were established under a campaign launched by Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDIP) to prevent or mitigate CNG related accidents.
Each of the Centre is duly approved by Chief Inspector of Explosive (CIE) and certified by HDIP, and is helping to check all un-approved CNG equipments including CNG cylinders and placement of cylinders at correct locations. HDIP will increase the number of testing centers soon.
An official at HDIP on Tuesday said conversion of vehicles on CNG is being done in Pakistan in three ways which are company fitted, converted at authorized workshops (workshops at CNG Stations duly approved by Chief Inspector of Explosives (CIE) under rule 18 of CNG Rules, 1992) and converted at illegal roadside workshops.
He said time and again provincial governments were asked to take action against these workshops.
The official said in order to prevent or mitigate CNG related accidents numerous measures were being adopted which included: HDIP is identifying locations for installation of CNG Cylinders in different type of vehicles. Uncertified vehicles are not being given fitness certificate or route permits by relevant transport authorities.
RFID chip scanning system will be introduced while media campaign is also launched for awareness of safety aspects associated with usage of CNG.
