Syria issues tender to buy 200,000 tonnes of wheat

Published Updated

DAMASCUS: Syria's state grains agency has issued a tender to buy 200,000 tonnes of soft wheat from Russia, Romania or Bulgaria, according to an official tender document received on Monday.

The tender document issued by Syria's General Establishment for Cereal Processing and Trade (Hoboob) was dated Dec. 2 and did not state a deadline for offers or say which Syrian ports will receive the shipments.

Syria's wheat crop this year was the smallest in three decades as war and drought cut production by around 30 percent, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said on Oct. 9.

In its last reported purchase on Oct. 22, the Syrian agency bought about 200,000 tonnes of Russian wheat, according to a government source.
