KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon, in his message on the occasion of National Minorities Day, said that in Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s Pakistan, every citizen is equal, and minority communities are an important part of Pakistan’s strength and national identity. Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis and all minority communities are the pride of Pakistan. Whether it is Diwali, Christmas, Baisakhi or Easter, the beauty of Sindh is reflected in the colours of different religions and cultures.
Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the Sindh government has always considered the protection of the constitutional, religious, social and economic rights of minority communities its responsibility. Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the Sindh government have a clear stance that all citizens living in Pakistan have equal rights.
He said that the Sindh government has taken several practical steps for the welfare, education, social security and protection of the religious places of minority communities. The scholarship program for students from minority communities is ongoing, while more than 6,000 minority students were provided scholarships from 2020 to 2025. The Sindh government wants minority youth to play a more effective role in the development of the province and the country through education and skills, and aims to provide them with equal opportunities to move forward.
Sharjeel Memon said that the Sindh government also provides financial assistance ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 for the marriage of daughters of deserving minority families. CCTV cameras have been installed at 253 locations to ensure the security of sensitive religious places of minority communities across the province, while steps have also been taken under various schemes for the repair, restoration and maintenance of minority places of worship.
Sharjeel said that the Sindh government has also established committees at the district level and facilitation desks at the divisional level to promote interfaith harmony. The aim of these measures is to promote religious tolerance, foster mutual respect among citizens belonging to different religions and further strengthen brotherhood in society. He said that other measures, including amendments to the Sindh Hindu Marriage Act, have also been taken to protect the legal rights of minority citizens.
He said that the contributions of minority citizens to the construction and development of Pakistan, as well as to the economy, education, health, defence, culture, arts and other sectors, are commendable. He reiterated that the Sindh government is committed to promoting a society where every citizen, regardless of religion, belief or community, enjoys equal rights, respect, security and opportunities for development.
