BENGALURU: India’s crude oil imports in May climbed 6.9percent from the previous month to 21.57 million metric tons, government data showed.
On an annual basis, crude oil imports rose 1.1percent, from 21.33 million tons in May last year, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell showed.
Imports of crude oil products fell over 30percent annually to 2.86 million tons in May, while product exports declined 33percent to 3.72 million tons.
LPG imports climbed to 1.15 million tons in May from 0.70 million tons in the previous month, while fuel oil imports rose month-on-month to 0.15 million tons, but were down from 0.51 million tons in May last year.
Exports of jet fuel declined to 0.47 million tons from 0.75 million tons in May last year, while diesel and petrol exports last month were 37percent lower y-o-y at 1.48 million tons and 0.91 million tons, respectively.
India raised windfall taxes on diesel exports to 14 rupees (USD0.1478) and that on aviation fuel to 12.5 rupees per litre, the government said in a statement on Monday, with the prices applicable for the next fortnight starting June 16.
The country also barred commercial fuel buyers from purchasing gasoline and diesel from retail stations and capped daily diesel purchases to prevent local shortages amid disruptions to global supply chains due to the war in the Middle East.
India’s fuel demand fell 6.5percent in May compared with the same month last year, data showed last week.
