LAHORE: Labour Day also known as May Day was marked here on Friday like other parts of the world with a resolve to continue efforts for giving due rights to the labour community and also extending them dignified place in the society.
To mark the day, labour unions held rallies to raise voice for their rights.
The day has its origins in the labour union movement specifically the eight-hour day movement which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation and eight hours for rest.
Different trade unions including Pakistan Railway Labour Union, Wapda Union, civic bodies workers Union, and others celebrated the day by holding rallies and seminars.
Labour Day observed on May 1 every year to remember the martyrs of Chicago who had laid down their lives for fundamental rights in 1886.
Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, in her special message on Labour Day, paid tribute to workers, miners and labourers across the world, acknowledging their dignity and vital contributions to society.
She also extended special appreciation to working women who serve as the economic backbone of their families, recognising their struggle and resilience.
The chief minister emphasised the need to ensure fair wages, a safe working environment, access to healthcare facilities and quality education for the children of labourers.
She said the Punjab government was committed to improving the standard of living of workers and promoting their prosperity.
The CM highlighted that ration cards along with a monthly subsidy of Rs3,000 were being provided to over 1.4 million workers. She added that under ongoing housing initiatives, labourers were being provided with ready-built flats to make them homeowners.
She said free medical treatment was being provided daily to millions of workers at social security hospitals and dispensaries. So far, 750 flats had been handed over to workers, while an additional 1,872 flats would be provided soon.
