Fake news, AI and climate challenges: Karachi hosts second day of CPA Asia Regional Conference

KARACHI: The second day of the Seventh CPA Asia Regional Conference and the Second Joint CPA Asia and South-East Asia Regional Conference continued at the Sindh Assembly on Thursday, bringing together parliamentary leaders from Pakistan and abroad to discuss democracy, global challenges, and collaborative strategies.

Key sessions on the agenda included the rise of fake news, artificial intelligence (AI)–generated content, climate change impacts, promotion of democratic values, and strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation. Parallel breakout sessions, plenary discussions, and high-level speeches were held at a private hotel alongside the main assembly proceedings.

A dedicated session on fake news and AI was chaired by National Assembly member Dr. Sharmeela Farooqi. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon highlighted the growing threat of deep fake and AI-generated content, calling it a serious challenge for both the government and society. He warned that such content not only affects governance but also poses risks to political parties and public discourse.

Sharjeel noted that the Information Department monitors developments 24/7 but stressed the urgent need for an AI detection system to distinguish fake from authentic content. He raised concerns over the increasing trend of false news being spread under the guise of reputable TV channels, including manipulated audio and video clips.
