Environmental conservation: Punjab CM inaugurates ‘Green Policing Unit’

LAHORE: In a landmark move for environmental conservation and modern policing, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the first-ever “Green Policing Unit” in Pakistan’s history.

During the ceremony, the chief minister Punjab inspected the new electric patrolling vehicle, personally drove it, and received a detailed briefing on the technical specifications and the broader vision of the initiative.

The CM directed officials to gradually expand the fleet of electric vehicles and ordered the phased implementation of green policing in other districts across the province. She highlighted that this initiative is a practical reflection of her administration’s commitment to a cleaner environment and the vision of good governance.

During the briefing, it was revealed that the first fleet of state-of-the-art BYD electric vehicles will be deployed for patrolling in Lahore. These eco-friendly vehicles boast a travel range of 410 kilometers per single charge.

The high-performance battery can be fast-charged from 30 percent to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes. Each vehicle is equipped with advanced surveillance technology, including a 360-degree camera, a modern public address (PA) system, police lights, and sophisticated speed detection equipment.

The transition to electric power is expected to yield massive financial and environmental benefits. Currently, a fleet of 103 fuel-powered patrolling vehicles consumes approximately 28,000 liters of fuel monthly, costing the provincial exchequer 7.42 million rupees.

By switching to electric units, the government expects an annual fuel saving of approximately 4,500 liters per vehicle, alongside a significant reduction in operational and maintenance costs.

Speaking on the occasion, Maryam Nawaz Sharif stated that the adoption of electric vehicles will lead to zero carbon emissions and a substantial reduction in expenditures. She reiterated that green policing is essential for ensuring a pollution-free atmosphere and modernising the infrastructure of the Punjab Police.
