KARACHI: In a significant step toward ensuring public safety and strengthening municipal services in the megacity, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced the monthly fund of Rs0.1 million to each Union Council for the maintenance of streetlights and the fixation or replacement of manhole covers.
The initiative has received formal approval, and disbursement will begin in December.
Mayor said that following the implementation of the new local government system—which introduced the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s towns, and Union Councils funds of each UC were increased to 1.2 million rupees per month.
Mayor Wahab stated that although manhole covers are provided by both the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, it was deemed necessary to provide an extra Rs one Lakh to each UC, exclusively for streetlight maintenance and manhole cover requirements.
