LAHORE: Growers have so far brought more than 125,000 acres of land under wheat sowing in the Gujranwala division.

All the stakeholders are playing an active role in achieving the sowing target of 16.5 million acres for the Punjab province for the current season 2025-25. Agriculture Minister Punjab Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani disclosed this during a joint meeting of Gujranwala and Gujrat divisions held under his chairmanship to review wheat cultivation. The Minister said wheat is essential for the country’s food security.

On the instructions of the chief minister Punjab, all possible resources are being utilized for achieving the wheat cultivation target.

Kirmani said through the use of super seeders, more than 125,000 acres in the Gujranwala division have been brought under wheat cultivation. Across the province, 5,000 super seeders have already been provided to farmers on subsidy, with the agriculture department offering them at 60 percent subsidy.

He added that, for the first time in the Rabi season, fertilizers are available in abundance at prices lower than the notified rates. A zero-tolerance policy is being implemented against those involved in the illegal business of fake agro-chemicals and fertilizers. As per the Chief Minister’s instructions, 100 percent wheat cultivation will be ensured on government lands.

Secretary Agriculture Punjab Iftikhar Ali Sahoo informed that wheat production competitions are being held. Farmers winning these competitions will be given cash prizes worth millions of rupees, including tractors. He said at the provincial level, first prize is an 85 HP tractor, second prize is a 75 HP tractor, and third prize is a 60 HP tractor, while at the district level, the first cash prize is Rs 1 million, second prize Rs 800,000, and third prize Rs. 500,000.

During the meeting, Commissioner Gujranwala Naveed Haider Shirazi informed that the wheat cultivation target for Gujranwala division is 1.185 million acres, while for Gujrat division it is 1.299 million acres.
