Caretaker PM seeks early completion of PIA restructuring plan

  • Premier issues directives for actions to be taken to further enhance the air connectivity between rural areas and other cities
Published September 5, 2023

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar directed that the detailed plan for restructuring Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) be presented as soon as possible to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), APP reported on Tuesday.

While presiding over a high-level meeting on PIA’s restructuring, the prime minister gave instructions to take measures to further improve the air link of rural areas with other cities in the country.

He said the flight timings of PIA should be fixed according to the convenience of the passengers.

He added that PIA was regarded as one of the top airlines in the world and that it was a significant national institution that had previously offered excellent aviation services and gained a positive reputation around the world.

He urged the management of PIA and the aviation division to put in continuous work in order to restore the airline to its former glory.

It was stated to members that the most recent amendment to the PIA Act 2016 had made reorganising PIA practicable.

Dr.Shamshad Akhtar, the acting finance minister, PM Advisor Ahad Cheema, and other others were present.

Pakistan International Airlines was included in the ongoing privatisation program by the outgoing government.

The Privatisation Division recently also presented a summary on detailed update regarding the privatisation of the Roosevelt Hotel.

The CCoP, after discussion, gave concurrence to the Privatisation Commission for hiring of a financial adviser to process/structure the transaction of Roosevelt Hotel, New York, an asset of the PIA Investment Limited (PIA-IL).

@Tulukan Mairandi, he’s talking about the 1960s and 70s. It was a very highly rated airline, in fact all of Pakistan was highly regarded. Until we started mixing island with politics.

The new owners must be solely Pakistani, and the Roosevelt hotel and any other fixed assets owned by the PIA, at home or abroad, must not be sold to any foreign buyer or a Pakistani based solely in a foreign country, unless they’re being forced by foreign intelligence agencies to live abroad and all their assets and families are in Pakistan. Roosevelt should’ve been converted to a high end luxury hotel but because of the new deal with the city of New York, it may prove to be difficult. It’s possible if the restructuring plan provides an opportunity to gain complete ownership of the hotel, which could allow the new owners to renegotiate with the city of New York to allow the owners to turn it into a hotel. If the Chinese can own Astoria Waldorf and run it even during UN meetings, why can’t we operate a hotel too, since we owned it way before they did?

Kakar you are acting like as if the whole country elected you. You have one job--hold elections. You are all over the place --PIA--SPIC--this and that. Do the one job that you are here for. Hold elections. What are you afraid of? that IK will win.

@Tulukan Mairandi, ''..... was regarded ....'' is correct from his side. You may/may not be old enough to remember that PIA marketing slogan was - and rightly so - Great People to Fly With.

Only wastage of time. Business plans and restructuring plans are being consistently prepared and presented by various Managements of PIA to the different Regimes just to gain time and this criminal practice is going on for the last twenty years. Everyone can see the progress of last 20 years. Destruction of PIA started in PMLN first tenure and amazingly they never took serious initiatives to bring this white elephant on right track. At the same time the great Air force of ours also kept putting their share of last nails in the coffin of dead organisation. Thanks to all.
