ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ended April 15, 2021 recorded an increase of 0.54 percent over the last week due to increase in the prices of food items including bananas (15.49 percent), tomatoes (15.02 percent), potatoes (7.42 percent), wheat flour bag (2.71 percent), and non-food items including telephone call charges (15.48 percent), says the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). According to the latest data, the SPI went up from 148 points during the week ended April 8, 2021 to 148.80 points during the week under review.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 16 (31.4 percent) items increased, 11 (21.6 percent) items decreased, and 24 (47.1 percent) items remained constant, said the PBS in weekly SPI data.

The PBS data further stated that the year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 18.43 percent with most of the items increased mainly chilies powder (139.64 percent), chicken (91.53 percent), tomatoes (76.99 percent), electricity for Q1 (67.03 percent), eggs (46.89 percent), bananas (35.13 percent), gents sandal (33.37 percent), mustard oil (30.66 percent), match box (30.47 percent), gents sponge chappal (25.13 percent), vegetable ghee (22.22 percent), and shirting (21.83 percent), while a major decrease was observed in the prices of garlic (38.82 percent), onions (38.15 percent), moong (16.47 percent), gram (6.69 percent), and masoor (6.01 percent).

The SPI for the consumption groups up to Rs17,733, from Rs17,733 to Rs22,888, Rs22,889 to Rs29,517, Rs29,518 to Rs44,175 and above Rs44,175 per month increased by 0.55 percent, 0.55 percent, 0.51 percent, 0.52 percent, and 0.56 percent respectively.

The commodities, which recorded increase in their average prices include bananas (15.49 percent), telephone call charges per minute (15.48 percent), tomatoes (15.02 percent), potatoes (7.42 percent), wheat flour bag 20kg (2.71 percent), shirting (0.98 percent), beef with bone (0.94 percent), mutton (0.66 percent), Sufi washing soap (0.55 percent), rice basmati broken (0.46 percent), chicken (0.45 percent), cooking oil dalda or other similar brand (sn), 5 litre tin each (0.39 percent), vegetable ghee Dalda/Habib or other superior quality 1kg pouch each (0.28 percent), vegetable ghee Dalda/Habib 2.5kg tin each (0.23 percent), mustard oil (0.16 percent), and toilet soap Lifebuoy 115gm each (0.12 percent).

According to the PBS, decrease was observed in the price of garlic (3.98 percent), pulse gram (2.58 percent), moong (2.19 percent), masoor (1.72 percent), maash (1.60 percent), LPG (1.20 percent), gur (0.86 percent), eggs (0.76 percent), sugar (0.74 percent), rice irri-6/9 (0.72 percent), and onions (0.53 percent).

The items of prices, which remained unchanged during the period under review include bread plain, milk fresh, curd, powdered milk Nido 390gm polybag each, salt powdered, chilies powder National 200gm packet each, tea Lipton Yellow Label 190gm packet each, cooked beef, cooked daal, tea prepared, cigarettes Capstan 20's packet, long cloth 57" Gul Ahmed/Al Karam, lawn printed Gul Ahmed/Al Karam, Georgette, gents sandal Bata pair, gents sponge chappal Bata pair, ladies sandal Bata pair, electricity charges for q1 per unit, gas, firewood whole 40kg, energy saver, match box, petrol super, and hi-speed diesel.
