ISLAMABAD: An official of Oxfom, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) claimed on Saturday that poverty ratio in the country has been increased from 24 percent to 38 percent between from 2005 to 2009.
Addressing a function to mark International Day for Enhancing Productivity here, Programme Manager Oxfam Mehnaz Ajmal Paracha said around 72.9 million people are living below poverty line while thousands of them are unable to meet the basic necessities of life.
She said that among those living in rural areas half of the people possess their own land while 2.5 percent rich families have occupied the land of 40 percent poor families.
Mehnaz highlighted the need to incorporate maximum facilities in agriculture policies for the landless farmers especially women farmers who are living below poverty line.
She emphasized on providing quality seeds, fertilizers and necessary equipments to the farmers to enhance the productivity.
A play was also presented which highlighted that low productivity and surge in prices of daily use items have increased the poverty in the country.
The play also portrayed how women cultivators are victimized by the feudal landlords and deprived of their right to land.
