French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin proposed on Thursday sending international peacekeepers to the Gaza Strip to pave the way for the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
His proposal followed a call by Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qorie for peacekeepers to be sent to Gaza if the Israeli army withdrew from the territory it has occupied since 1967.
Villepin made no mention of Qorie's appeal in an interview with Le Figaro newspaper and did not say if it was intended as a response to his call. He did not say when he envisaged the dispatch of a peacekeeping force or who should be part of it.
