imageISLAMABAD: Developing viable energy resources or utilizing alternative energy resources, could help overcome electricity shortage in the country.

Focusing on short and long term plans to meet the energy crisis through alternative resources would help resolve the issues being faced by the people living in different parts of the country.

Experts in a seminar suggested ways and means for developing viable energy resources to address electricity shortage in shortest possible time.

The seminar was organized by Department of Physics, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), aimed at providing academic support to the policy-makers for developing short and long term plans to meet the energy crisis through alternative resources.

Chairman, Department of Physics, Dr. Syed Zafar Ilyas highlighted various initiatives recently taken to promote research-based study on crucial issues like energy shortage.

Renowned energy expert, Dr. Shoaib Ahmed called for developing renewable resources, particularly solar, wind and coal. He suggested that country's vast coal reserves should be utilized in a proper manner for power generation.

Earlier, speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui, urged their students to come up with the creative and innovative ideas for addressing the challenge of power shortage.

The University, he said will encourage them to develop mini projects in energy sector. The outstanding projects will be awarded special prizes, he said.

He said the university through its academic research-based programs, has laid special focus on various issues related to socio-economic problems. He underlined the need for developing small projects to overcome the load-shedding crisis through traditional and non-traditional means.

This objective could be achieved by promoting entrepreneurship at the level of young scientists and researchers, he added.
