imageISLAMABAD: Thanks to different user-friendly packages announced by mobile phone operators, the newly introduced 3G services have witnessed a reasonable response and its subscription reached around 2.7 million mark since its launch from April this year.

The number is grossly close to 3.37 million broadband users that are available in the country. If uptake remains the same, the number of mobile broadband subscriptions is soon going to cross the number of broadband subscribers within next few months.

The operators including Mobilink, Ufone, Telenor and China Mobile (Zong), providing 3G commercial services, are not noly expanding their coverage for mobile broadband but also introducing bundle packages to woo subscribers to adopt such services.

Mobilink has announced that it has hit one million mark within 90 days of commercial launch which is the fastest uptake of 3G services of any cellular operator in Pakistan.

Mobilink's 3G services were launched in July this year and continue to provide high-speed internet to customers in 12 cities.

Chief Commercial Officer Mobilink Bilal Munir Sheikh on Thursday said reaching the 1 million mark is only the beginning of a journey for customers and manifestation of our strategic approach towards building an ecosystem of high-speed internet in the country.

Our roll-out plan is carefully designed to ensure that we provide the most robust 3G coverage in cities in which we are present. Our teams on-ground continue to work towards ensuring that we providing the best customer experience in existing cities and locations before committing to new ones, he said.

Similarly, Ufone, Telenor and Zong are also engaged in stretching their 3G network in different cities as per obligation announced by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

A telecom experts has said 3G adoption has been tremendous during early months considering the limited coverage from telecom operators in the country, the subscribers size of 2.7 million in almost five months is more than what they were originally expecting.

The magnitude of 3G usage to increase exponentially in coming months.
