LAHORE: Researchers collaboration with industry is of the utmost importance to keep local industry competitive in the international market by establishing missing links.
Dr Amir Ejaz, the Director Research UET, said talking to APP here on Saturday.
The collaboration is must to improve quality of products and processes leading to decreased import of raw material and increased export of finished products.
He said products and processes needing improvement should ideally be in priority areas relevant to national needs for socio-economic development of the country.
University-Industry linkage concept had successfully evolved in the developed world and some developing countries had also made visible efforts to have this linkage working under institutionalized system, he added.
"Necessity for this linkage is also being felt in Pakistan for quite some time but not much has so far been achieved", he added.
He said a long-term business relationship between research institutions and industries could be developed provided all stakeholders play their due role in this respect.
"Upgrading faculties in relevant institutions and providing them with suitable funding for equipping laboratories and libraries and allocation of funds to institutions for a practical research work with a view to enhance practical applicability of research done by learned professionals", he said.
He said in order to develop an interactive and interdependent economic system in a shortest possible time, three stakeholders ie the government, industry and the higher education institutions had to realize the importance of linkages and take concrete measures for the establishment of meaningful cooperation.
He stressed the need of architecting a national innovation system with appropriate framework and policies that govern and provide incentives for university industry interactions.
