News of Gmail’s major update was going on around for a while and today, Gmail finally got a big make-over comprising numerous amazing features.

The new update comes with various new features including email snoozing and confidential mode. However, the update won’t be immediately available to Gmail’s 1.4 billion users and those receiving it initially will be provided the option of switching to the new mode rather than just turning it on itself.

Lead product manager of Gmail, Jacob Bank informed The Verge that this redesign was done with an eye on ‘making people safer and more productive’. The new ‘Confidential Mode’ permits sender to set up an expiration date for a sensitive email or be able to revoke it entirely. The confidential content won’t be sent directly, only a link to the content would be sent that can be accessed by the recipient via their Gmail or another email account. The sender is in charge of for how long the recipient can access it.

Gmail to soon go through major makeover

‘Integrated rights management’ (IRM) is another business-centric feature through which user can block forwarding, downloading, copying or printing of specific messages. Through this feature, the company aims to improve the problem of people accidentally sharing data with wrong person.

With ‘Two-factor authentication’ (2FA) feature also comes under the confidential mode with which the recipient is asked to verify received message via a passcode. There is also an unmissable call to action for the user when Gmail detects a potentially malicious or fraudulent message.

Another new feature is ‘Email snoozing’ that works with new ‘Hover menu’ through which an email can be archived, deleted, marked as read, or snoozed for later read. However, it’s not sure if this change will be in the mobile Gmail app too. Email attachments can be tapped directly from inbox without the need of opening a particular conversation.

Through ‘nudging’ emails, emails that require users’ attention are resurfaced. Also, ‘collapsing right-side panel’ will contain Google’s G Suite apps along with letting the user to perform important tasks without the need of leaving email and go to a new tab or app. Google’s ‘collapsing left-side panel’ will contain navigation links.

Other updates also include Smart Reply, Native Offline Mode, High-priority notifications and one-tap unsubscribe prompt. The update is surely one of Google’s biggest to date.
