KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Wildlife Dr. Daya Ram Essarani Wednesday reiterated his stance refuting the reports of widespread deaths of peacocks in Thar Desert and said only few birds have died of disease so far.
He also stated that Wildlife department had no veterinary doctors, vaccines and necessary funds for the treatment of animals inflicted with diseases.
Speaking on a point of order in Sindh Assembly, Minister said vaccination of every wild animal was not possible, but his department had had started an awareness his campaign in this regard.
He said the Wildlife department had no vaccines or veterinary doctors of its own however the livestock department had provided 30,000 vaccines recently for peacocks.
Denying huge number of mortality of peacocks in Tharparkar, Daya Ram said he did not know whether any such deaths occurred in forests. The first death of a peacock was reported on July 18 and it was discovered during a visit that a viral disease caused a few deaths.
Minister said his department held a high-level meeting with all stake-holders including livestock department, IUCN and WWF to discuss the matter. WWF has provided 5,000 vaccines to contain the disease, reportedly spreading among peacocks, he added.
He told 38 peacocks infected with disease were currently being treated in Mithi. "Sindh Government is vigilant on the issue and taking all-out steps to prevent this problem being spread," he remarked.
