ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of Japan on Thursday started week long cultural activities to celebrate "Japan Week" at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA).
The show started with Ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangement) Workshop and Demonstration in which more than 30 students were introduced to the skills of making flower arrangements with fresh and dry floral accessories.
Ikebana which literally means "flowers kept alive", developed into a distinct art form in Japan in the 15th century and is now practiced all over the world including Pakistan.
Mrs. Asifa Ataka, a Professor of Ikebana, from Karachi conducted the Ikebana workshop for the beginners while advanced classes will continue till March 14.
Mrs. Ataka studied Ikebana from the Ikenobo School, one of the leading flower arrangement schools in Japan.
The Ikebana demonstration and a certificate award ceremony will be held on March 15.
The other activities of the week will focus on multi-dimensions of the Japanese culture old and new, featuring a Japanese film show, Judo demonstration and inauguration of the exhibition "Passage to the Future: Art from a New Generation in Japan".
The Japanese film "Fifteen" (GAKKO-IV) which depicts friendship between two boys in everyday Japanese life will be shown on March 14 at the auditorium of the National Art Gallery while Judo demonstration will be held on March 15.
The exhibition "Passage to the Future: Art from a New Generation in Japan", an exhibit of Japanese Contemporary Art, will be inaugurated on March 16.
This exhibition will present paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, and video works by eleven young contemporary Japanese artists.
