KDCG removes 70pc encroachments from parks: SC told

 ISLAMABAD: The counsel for Karachi District City Government (KDCG) on Monday apprised the Supreme Court that they had so far removed seventy per cent encroachments from the amenity parks.

A three-Judge bench of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani resumed hearing of its previous directive upon a plea filed by Naimatullah Khan, former Karachi Nazim, seeking removal of illegal encroachments from the public parks.

Dr Faroogh Naseem, counsel for the City Government, assured the bench that the concerned authorities would be able to remove all the encroachments.

He assured that they would fully comply with the apex Court's direction in this regard. But Shuakat Aziz Siddiqui, counsel for the petitioner said that the situation was not like he was stating and submitted documentary and video record to prove his contentions.

The bench adjourned the hearing till March 22 after directing the counsel for KCDG to consult Naimatullah and seek his assistance over the issue.

The former Karachi District Nazim through his plea had said that the conversion of parks and public lands into residential and commercial properties was illegal, unlawful and in gross violation of the fundamental rights of citizens.

Referring to Article 184(3) of the Constitution, the petitioner had raised 14 questions beforte the Court to settle.

He also provided details of offices set up by the political parties on public properties in Shah Faisal Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town, Gadap Town, Jamshed Town, Malir Town, Site Town, Orangi Town, District South, District Central, Kimari Town, while parks and plots where residential/commercial plotting was done in the last four years are located in North Nazimabad Town, Baldia Town, Site Town, Orangi Town, New Karachi Town, Gulberg Town and Gadap Town.
