Wall Street opens down on bad data, US-China tensions

NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks fell in opening trading Friday following weak US retail sales data and Trump administration actions against Chinese telecoms giant Huawei that escalated tensions with Beijing.

About five minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 23,400.95, down 1.0 percent.

The broad-based S&P 500 dropped 1.1 percent to 2,821.71, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index slumped 1.1 percent to 8,842.46.
