UNITED NATIONS: A former head of UN peacekeeping, Jean-Marie Guehenno, is to be named as a deputy envoy to former UN secretary general Kofi Annan in his mission to end the Syrian government crackdown, diplomats said Wednesday.
Guehenno, from France, will join former Palestinian diplomat Nasser al-Qudwa as deputy to Annan, who is to go to Damascus on Saturday to launch his mission.
Qudwa's appointment has already been announced by the Arab League. The naming of Guehenno is imminent, diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity. They said Guehenno, 62, will be based in New York but could accompany Annan on his travels.
Annan has been named special envoy by the Arab League and United Nations in a bid to halt the violence in Syria which the UN says has left more than 7,500 dead.
