rehmanLAHORE: Federal Interior Minister Abdur Rehman Malik has said that unity and democracy are vital for sovereignty of the country.

Addressing the lawyers after inaugurating passport office for lawyers at Lahore High Court Bar Association here on Saturday, he said nation could not make progress without unity, faith and diciplin as well as tolerance.

He said Pakistan was facing challenges by several countries and elements but the nation had to be united to tackle every kind of pressure.

He paid tributes to Chief Justice Pakistan Iftekhar Muhmmad Chaudhary, judiciary, lawyers and the media for their struggle for democracy, independent judiciary and free media.

The minister also appreciated the role of President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and other political parties for the restoration of the constitution and democracy in the country.

He said the PPP-led government had given respect to the lawyers community and it would further do several things for them.

On the occasion, the federal minister approved all demands presented by LHC Bar Association president Shehram Sarwar Chaudhary.

He announced restricted-bore weapon licences to be issued to lawyers, adding that official blue passport would be issued to office bearers of all bars of the country.

He said a 100-page passport would be issued to lawyers on an ordinary fee. He also directed to open NADRA office for issuing national identity cards within 24 hours in the premises of passport office established at the LHC.

He assured the lawyers that a special cell would be set up in the Interior Ministry Islamabad to resolve issues of lawyers.
