The City Traffic Police (CTP) Lahore has made it mandatory for all traffic wardens up to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) to break their fast while performing their duties on roads to maintain a smooth flow of traffic during Ramazan-ul-Mubarak.
An official of the traffic police told Business Recorder that Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Rai Ejaz Ahmed made this decision while presiding over a meeting held here at the Qurban Lines to finalise traffic arrangements for Ramazan so the people could travel without any hassle.
"During the meeting, it was emphasised by the CTO that no official will be allowed to come on the roads without wearing their uniforms and those who found in civil dress will be dealt with iron hands," he said, reiterating that all senior officials will be bound to himself distribute sehri, iftari and dinner among their subordinates at their designated spots.
While sharing the menu of Iftari, the official said that the CTP will provide each warden bottle of a mineral water, juice, samosa, dates and a fruit cake. To a query, he said the wardens will be deployed in two phases. In the first phase, a contingent comprising of over 700 wardens will be deployed while around 2,000 personnel will discharge their duties in the second shift, the official said.
He said the lady wardens will also be deployed in the first shift only for almost four hours. It may be noted that the female wardens were called back from field duties after they complained to the higher authorities about the harsh behaviour of the commuters, especially youngsters who makes fun of them. The personnel of the second shift will assume their duties moments before the Iftar, he added. "Except in highly-emergency cases, the CTO has cancelled long leaves of all officials to not only meet the upcoming traffic challenges during the holy month but also to counter shortage of personnel," the official said, adding that all types of transfer and posting has also been stopped by the top brass to ensure smooth working of the department till the end of Ramazan.
Meanwhile, the City Traffic Police also launched a traffic awareness campaign in the provincial capital in which flexes inscribed with traffic laws and damages the people could sustain will be pasted on backside of the Rickshaws.
Through the exercise, the CTP will also create among the people about the advantages of its mobile application "Rasta App" which was designed for the facilitation and guidance of the people.
Speaking on the occasion, the CTO said more than 5,000 flexes will be pasted on the backside of the rickshaws under the campaign and hoped that it will bring fruitful results in future.
