Supply of electricity from the affected part of K-Electric's Bin Qasim Power unit is likely to take three to four more days as the power utility on Wednesday imported the required part from Holland-two weeks after the plant developed fault resulting in suspension of some 200MW electricity to Karachi.
"The required rotor, weighing over 41 tonnes, was airlifted via the cargo aircraft Antonov and has been transferred to KE's Bin Qasim facility on emergency basis." said a KE spokesman in a statement.
The team of experts has initiated installation work of the equipment at plant premises. Installation and re-energization of the affected unit is expected to be completed by May 20th which will lead to an improvement in the city's power situation, it said.
On May 3 last, the fault occurred at the BQP unit, forcing the company to carryout load-shedding to the previously exempted residential areas of the city by 2 to 3 hours.
The power utility regrets the inconvenience caused to customers during this time and making all possible efforts to improve the power situation in the city. It is pertinent to note that industrial areas as well as all strategic installations are still exempted from load-shed whereas supply of electricity is normal at the intermediate examination centers as well while no unscheduled load shed is carried out in the city.
K-Electric will serve its customers during the holy month of Ramazan wherein peak demand is expected to reach around 3400MW. Residential customers will be given priority during Sehr and Iftar whereas industrial areas will experience load shed of up to 6 hours during the night to ensure that maximum relief is provided to residential customers during Ramazan.
K-Electric requested the consumers to conserve energy throughout the day and avoid the use of heavy machinery during peak hours.
