After the registration of over 117 first information reports (FIRs), the Punjab police have arrested 80 persons for employing bonded labour at brick kilns across the province.
Out of the total arrested individuals, 29 were the owners of brick kilns while the other 51 were its managers, said a spokesman for the Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP), here on Friday. He said the arrests were made during its ongoing drive against the elimination of bonded labour at brick kilns in Punjab.
The spokesman further said that the police personnel had carried out a survey to identify the places where underage children were working. "Under the Punjab Prohibition of Child Labour at Brick Kilns Act, 2016, we have also recovered 141 minors from such kilns," he said.
In this regard, he said, the IGP had already directed all senior cops including the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore, District Police Officers (DPOs) and the Regional Police Officers (RPOs) to intensify their crackdown with the help of concerned stakeholders for the elimination of bonded labour.
He said the IGP had also directed to ensure a swift FIR registration mechanism against the owners and the managers of the brick kilns throughout the province.
The IGP had clarified that no negligence will be tolerated if someone found adopting delaying tactics in this context.
