A sub-inspector Tariq Bashir Cheema and a constable Muhammad Ashraf successfully escaped arrest here Friday from the Lahore High Court premises after court dismissed their bails. Earlier, the counsel of the suspected cops argued that the victim Mudassar and two others were riding a stolen motorbike when police signaled them to stop at a police picket. However, he said, the bike riders opened fire at the police team.
The personnel had no option but to retaliate the firing in self-defence leading to the death of Mudassar, the counsel added. On the other side, prosecutor told the court that the cops had arrested Mudassar from his house and later killed in fake encounter. He said the suspects reached an agreement with the mother of the victim and paid her money for not pursuing the case.
He said a joint investigation team also found Cheema, Ashraf and other police personnel guilty of killing Mudassar in fake encounter. The court after hearing both sides dismissed bail petitions of Cheema and Ashraf.
