The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday adjourned the hearing of a petition seeking impartial inquiry into police encounters led by ex-SSP Malir Rao Anwar since 1992. Hearing was adjourned till 11th April due to absence of petitioner. A division bench headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto was hearing the petition filed by Advocate Muzammil Mumtaz Meo Rajput, praying to form a high-profile committee to probe into the allegations of killing 250 persons in 'fake encounters' by Rao Anwar.
Earlier, the petitioner had submitted that the then SSP Rao Anwar misused his powers during a long period of posting as SSP Malir and led hundreds of 'staged encounters' but none of them was scrutinized impartially. During Rao Anwar's tenure as Malir SSP, he was often suspended and removed on the charges of staged encounters but no one replaced him, petitioner maintained. The suspended SSP Malir landed in hot waters after alleged extra-judicial killing of Naqeebullah Mehsood, a young man found very active on social media.
It may be noted that it's not the first time that Rao's name came into lights for extra-judicial murders as similar sort of cases were surfaced in the past also.
