In an unprecedented move, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa will brief Committee of the Whole House of the Senate tomorrow (Tuesday) on the emerging national security paradigm for Pakistan in the wake of US President Donlad Trump's new policy to the region.
According to a notice issued by the Senate Secretariat, an in-camera meeting of the Committee of the Whole House, constituted on a motion moved by Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq "To prepare policy guidelines in the light of emerging regional realities and the role of United States" will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the Senate Chamber/ Hall.
To be chaired by Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani, it stated that Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa along with D.G. Military Operations (MO) Major General Sahir Shamshad Mirza will brief the Committee on 'the emerging national security paradigm for Pakistan with respect to recent visits, developments', besides any other item with permission of the Chair.
Parliamentary sources said that it would be a rare precedent the Army Chief is going to set by appearing before the Committee of the House to take them into confidence on the emerging national security paradigm for Pakistan in the wake of US administration's new South Asia and Afghan strategy.
They said that the session would comprise of the briefing session followed by question and answer hour in which the members of the Senate would be allowed to put their questions to the Army Chief. "If the Army Chief is coming to brief the Senate [committee of the whole], it's a good precedent and [it] should be welcomed", said Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Senator Farhatullah Babar, while talking to Business Recorder.
He said that it would provide an opportunity to the members of the Senate to share their reservations on various issues of national importance related to the security establishment and get response from the military top leadership. To a question if it would a positive step towards strengthening the teething democracy in the country, he stated "I will have reservations if it is the parliament [parliamentarians], going to the GHQ [general headquarters]...but I would welcome if it is the GHQ coming to the parliament to explain the things".
