Ninety-five per cent work on New Islamabad International Airport terminal building has been completed and all civil works would be completed by March 2017 with a revised estimated cost of Rs 82 billion. It is reliably learnt that the trial flights will be conducted in July after reviewing all operational work.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will inaugurate this state-of-the-art facility on August 14, revealed Secretary Civil Aviation Authority Irfan Elahi during a high-level meeting. The meeting chaired by the Prime Minister was conducted to review the progress on New Islamabad International Airport project and its allied infrastructure.
Elahi also informed that the airport will facilitate almost 4,500 passengers simultaneously with 15 docking stations, where two A-380 aircraft would be able to dock at the same time. He updated that the new airport will have state-of-the-art facilities including cargo handling, safety and security, passenger facilitation and parking services.
He also briefed that the construction work on new terminal of Allama Iqbal Airport, Lahore, will start in March.
The chairman NHA told the meeting that the new airport is being provided main road access from both motorways M-1 & M-2 and also from main GT Road.
He said the airport will also have access to Islamabad Metro Bus Service that the Prime Minister will inaugurate on August14, 2017 along with new airport.
The Prime Minister also approved the design of Metro Bus from Golra Mor to new airport.
PM Sharif directed that no compromise should be made on the quality of work.
He also said that infrastructure projects are the backbone of a growing economy and are essential to facilitate masses.
The construction of New Islamabad International Airport was started more than a decade ago. The incessant delays have caused escalation of the initially estimated cost.
