That India is sending mixed signals is a fact that has found its best expression from prime minister Narendra Modi's greetings that he conveyed to his Pakistan counterpart on latter's birthday anniversary on Sunday. A few days ago New Delhi was ready for talks with Pakistan on any issue.
Reacting to recent comments by Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that Islamabad wants peaceful settlement of matters with India, external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, "We have never refused talks, but Pakistan has to ensure a peaceful atmosphere. Pakistan needs to stop supporting terrorism. Pakistan should create a healthy atmosphere for talks.
In the midst of such overtures to the Pakistani government India is trying to change the demographic composition of Jammu and Kashmir. New Delhi has also started the 'water terrorism' process with a view to accentuating its neighbour's water woes. Our policymakers must take stock of the situation. India's mixed signals are dangerous, indeed.
