Child Right Movement Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (CRM-KP) celebrated the Universal Children's Day, with objective to promote child rights and resolve child related issues in the province. Shakeel Khan (Coordinator Child Rights Movement KP), while speaking at a function at press club, has demanded the enactment of pending child rights related bills and implementation of existing child rights laws in KP".
He said child rights require special attention of the provincial government and the Child Rights Movement (CRM) KP to expedite its advocacy and campaigning work to ensure effective steps for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child ratified by Pakistan on November 12, 1990. He further explained that after 18th constitutional amendment provincial government is responsible to legislate in accordance with the UNCRC.
On the occasion, speakers shared that there is a need for policy level advocacy to strengthen child protection system under the KP Child Protection and Welfare Commission, functioning of Borstal institution under the KP Borstal Institution Act 2012, legislation on article 25A of the constitution (Free and Compulsory Education from age 5-16), implementation of KP Prohibition of Employment of Children Act, 2015 and implementation of the KP Breast Feeding and Child Nutrition Act, 2015.
Shakeel Khan showed concerns on delays about pending legislative bills including the KP Child Marriages Restraint Bill, Prohibition of Corporal Punishment Bill & the KP Right to free and Compulsory Education Bill, and urged the provincial assemblies to prioritise child rights related legislation. He suggested that the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should increase budgetary allocation for children to give them education, good health and rights protection.
The Government of KP should allocate budget for establishing CPUs in all districts of the Province with sufficient trained human resources and an effective response and referral mechanism so that the children of the province are protected.
