The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has helped 75 industrial units in seven SME sectors to reduce cost of doing business by conducting energy audits and implementing innovative Energy Management System (EMS).
According to a study, the energy cost as a share of total production cost ranges from 20 percent to 50 percent in different industrial sectors and SMEDA, taking cognisance of the issue, has developed a special initiative for energy audit followed by an innovative Energy Management System in collaboration with its international partners like German International Cooperation (GIZ) and Training & Development Centers of Bavarian Employers' Association.
Out of a total 75, 42 units have been facilitated through the energy audit programme while 33 units have been supported by developing EMS. The facilitated units belong to spinning, weaving, processing, jute, auto parts, furniture and marble sectors. As a result of the aforementioned interventions, these units have been enabled to save energy from 10 percent to 30 percent depending upon the nature of respective sector.
Industry support programme head Ashfaq Ahmad while commenting on the programme said that EMS, like all other management systems, is a formal system which offers a structured approach in dealing with energy issues for continuous improvement.
At international level EN16001 and ISO50001 are the standards for EMS aiming to help organisations in establishing the systems and processes necessary to improve energy efficiency, he said, adding that SMEDA, along with its international partners, has not only introduced but also implemented the systems in letter and sprits leading to considerable reductions in cost and greenhouse gas emissions through systematic management of energy. The stepwise approach for EMS implementation included development of an energy policy, appointment of an energy management team led by an energy manager, energy documentation system and system evaluation, he said.
