Around 40 suspects were rounded up in raids by law enforcement agencies that seemed to have intensified ongoing crackdown on criminals in the wake of series of suspected sectarian attacks that left several people dead in this metropolis. Ahl-e-Sunnat wal Jamaat (ASWJ) Karachi chapter general secretary Taj Hanfi and two of his comrades were also taken into custody during a search operation at a mosque in Nagan Chowrangi area on Sunday.
The operation began at Siddique-e-Akbar Mosque where law enforcers seized literature advocating banned outfits and their activities besides confiscating a cache of weapons.
Hanfi, who is said to be a known figure of ASWJ Karachi chapter, was arrested with arms and hate-literature. He and his comrades were moved to undisclosed location for interrogations.
Law enforcers also conducted raids in Rizvia Society and arrested several people including an alleged terrorist of banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi who was imparted training in Afghanistan. SSP Central said he was a target killer and also worked for outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Mohmand group in the past.
Two more people were injured by unidentified men in Korangi area. The victims were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment.
A man was killed while another was injured when unknown gunmen opened fire targeting them at New Rizvia. The deceased was identified as Kamran Kazmi, 35, son of Tehwar Kazmi and injured as Anwar Kazmi, 56, son of Asghar Kazmi, respectively. Condition of the injured was said to be out of danger.
A search operation was conducted in Godhra area late on Saturday night, during which 35 suspects were taken into custody and shifted to police station for further investigation.
Rangers also claimed to have arrested two suspected target killers involved in sectarian and politically motivated killings.
