KOTLI LOHARAN: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on Sunday said that there was no shortage of wheat in the country and even Pakistan was in a position to export the commodity.
Talking to media persons in Kot Bawa village, Dr Firdous said the PPP-led government was utilizing all resources for attaining food autarky. The government is trying at its level best to minimise economic burden on the farmers by enhancing wheat support price from Rs 450 to Rs 1150, besides ensuring quality seed, fertilizer and providing subsidy on electricity across the country, she added.
The minister said the government had focused its special attention on the promotion of agro-based sector because 70 percent of the country's population was engaged with this sector.
She said the aim of this strategy was to eliminate the difference between rural and urban areas and bringing rural areas at par with the developed ones.
Under the strategy, she said all basic facilities like gas, electricity, means of communication, education and health would be provided in rural areas on priority basis.
Dr Firdous said this programme would also be helpful in discouraging rapid migration from rural to urban areas, adding that it would also helpful in reducing the population burden on big cities.
She said that over Rs 1 trillion was being spent on people's welfare projects through members of the National Assembly (MNAs) in their respective constituencies throughout the country.
