National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Karachi has recovered Rs 18.55 billion and arrested 172 persons in different corruption cases in 2015. This was informed to Chairman NAB Qamar Zaman Chaudhry during his visit to the Bureau for annual inspection. During the briefing, the chairman was informed that NAB Karachi has disposed of 6,798 complaints in 2015, which are higher than the number of complaints in 2014 or any previous years.
In 2015, NAB Karachi out of 270 complaints verifications (CVs), 214 CVs were completed while out of 407 inquiries, 328 are accomplished and 128 investigations out of 240 were finalised on merit. During 2015, NAB Karachi has arrested 172 persons and filed 101 corruption references. With 63 percent conviction rate, NAB Karachi has recovered Rs 18.55 billion in 2015.
The inspection was carried out from January 6 to 8, 2016 in order to review and evaluate the performance of NAB Karachi Bureau on the basis of a quantified grading system on the basis of the newly introduced quantified grading system. Senior member, Chairman's Inspection and Monitoring Team (CI&MT) along with his team conducted the said inspection for the year 2015. He gave a detailed briefing to Chairman NAB about the inspection done and highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of NAB Karachi Bureau.
He informed that on the directions of the Chairman NAB, a quantified grading system has been devised. Under this grading system, the performance of all NAB's Regional Bureaus is being evaluated during January and February 2016 at uniform criteria. 80% mark will be considered "Outstanding/Excellent", between 60% to 79% will be considered as "Very Good", between 40% to 49% will be considered as "Good", while marks less than 40% will be considered as "Below Average".
The NAB chairman said NAB was Pakistan's apex anti-corruption organisation assigned with the responsibility of elimination of corruption through a holistic approach of awareness, prevention and enforcement. It operates under the National Accountability Ordinance-1999 which is extended to all of Pakistan, including FATA and Gilgit Baltistan. NAB has its Headquarter at Islamabad while it has seven regional bureaus located at Karachi, Lahore, Pehsawar, Quetta, Sukkur, Multan and Rawlapindi.
Chairman NAB said that NAB Karachi is one of the important regional bureaus of NAB. It played prominent role in contributing towards the overall performance of NAB, he added. Chairman Inspection and Monitoring Team (CI&MT) in view of the assessed annual performance based on evaluation under quantified grading system prepared by the Chairman Inspection and Monitoring Team (CI&MT) graded NAB Karachi's performance as outstanding/excellent with 88% operational efficiency index. He said that NAB Karachi had shown phenomenal performance in a year under the supervision of DG NAB Karachi Colonel Siraj ul Naeem (Retd) and directed all officers/officials of NAB Karachi to work hard for further improvement.
