208 Karachi Union Councils: MQM grabs 136 seats, PPP 25, PML-N 19, PTI-JI alliance 18, JUI-ANP alliance 4

Muttahida Qaumi Movement's (MQM) bagged 136 chairmen seats out of a total 208 Union Committees (UCs) in Karachi that went for local bodies polls, after a gap of 10 years, on Saturday.
Unofficial results available with APP Sunday revealed that Pakistan Peoples Party is the runner up bagging 25 UCs and PML-N clinching victory in 19 UCs followed by JI-PTI alliance with their chairmen in 18 UCs and JUI-ANP alliance winning in four UCs.
Polling in UC 17, Jamshed Town had to be cancelled due to death of PPP candidate Imran Usman Saturday morning.
As per unconfirmed results MQM clinched 50 of the 51 UCs in district Central; 33 out of 37 UCs in district Korangi; 20 out of 31 UCs in district East; 22 out of 46 UCs in district West; three out of 13 UCs in district Malir and 11 out of 31 UCs in district South. PPP, the second largest winning party won 11 UCs in district South; five out of 13 UCs in Malir district; four out of 46 UCs in district West; four out of 31 UCs in district East; one out of 51 in district Central and nil in Korangi district.
Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) managed to make its presence felt in 19 UCs including eight UCs in district west; 5 UCs in district Malir; 4 UCs in district South; one in Korangi district and one in district east.
Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI-JI) Alliance made their mark in 18 UCs that encompassed five UCs in district east; six UCs in district west; three in district South and two each in Malir and Korangi districts respectively.
The JUI-ANP Alliance had their chairman in four union councils pertaining to district West (three) and Malir (one) respectively.
With given results unofficial sources said MQM holds all chances to clinch the mayor's slot in the metropolitan. However the single largest winner in Karachi (urban) could not win in any of the 38 UCs representing rural parts of Karachi, said unofficial sources. PPP has emerged to be the largest winner with 23 seats followed by independent candidates winning in 13 of the UCs and PML-N clinching two of these.
It would be pertinent to mention that there are 209 UCs; unconfirmed results for 204 have appeared, while election in one UC is yet to be conducted. Each union committee comprising four wards offers six seats for direct election: a chairman, a vice chairman and general members for each of the four wards.
The elected members will later elect two members on the seats reserved for women and one each for peasant or labourer, youth and non-Muslims.
As for union council, 38 in Karachi, encompassing rural areas of the city, comprise a chairman, a vice chairman and four general members while a member from each UC will be elected directly to represent it in the respective district council. Like union committees, union councils also has five reserved seats.
