NEW YORK: US stocks gave up modest gains Monday to end the session flat as wary investors focused on European Union talks aimed at forging a deal on Greece's debt write-down with private bondholders.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 11.21 points (0.09 percent) to 12,709.27 in closing trade, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite dipped 2.62 points (0.09 percent) to 2,784.08.
The broad-based S&P 500 edged up 0.54 point (0.04 percent) to 1,315.92.
Investors watched Greece's struggles to obtain a debt writedown with private-sector bondholders that would pave the way for additional financing to avert a default in March.
The European Union's euro commissioner, Olli Rehn, said Monday he was optimistic that negotiations with banks on a massive write-down of Greek government debt could be wrapped up, "preferably" this week.
