Top US commander in Afghanistan General John F. Campbell on Thursday appreciated Pakistan's gains in the ongoing operation Zarb-e-Azb against the militants, saying that the actions are helping in bring peace and stability in the whole region. According to Director General ISPR Maj. Gen. Asim Bajwa, Commander Resolute Support Mission and US Forces in Afghanistan Gen. John F. Campbell called on Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) General Raheel Sharif at General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi.
He said that the two generals discussed matters related to security situation along Pak-Afghan border region. "Gen. Campbell also appreciated gains of ongoing operation Zarb-e-Azb, which are greatly helping in bringing peace and stability in the entire region," Bajwa said. Delegation level talks were also held, which focused on issue related to further improving the border co-ordination mechanism. The spokesperson further said that General Campbell acknowledged Pakistan's sincere efforts and particularly those of the Army Chief for facilitating Murree peace talks recently held between the Afghan government and members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan.
Pakistan on July 07 hosted for the first time direct talks between Afghan government and the Taliban's representatives for a possible peace deal in the war-torn Afghanistan. In the talks, which were also attended by representatives of United States and China, the two sides agreed to continue the dialogue process and both the sides are expected to meet again on July 30 for another round.
