The importance of water cannot be challenged in any way. Without water life comes to a standstill. Water is key for human survival, we may live weeks without food but we can only survive days without water. A drop of clean water is precious, precious for many lives around the world that live each day in hope of getting this basic necessity fulfilled. It is a basic right that cannot be denied as every human in the world deserves clean and safe water to live.
The world commemorates World Water Day each year to celebrate water and assert the importance of water in the lives of people, animals, plants and primarily in the proper functioning of our planet Earth. Water is life, water is health, water is energy, water is food security, and water is the way to a better future. Billions of people around the world yearn for a drop of clean water, women spend millions of hours each year to fetch water.
Shortage of water in Sindh especially in Thar is known to all and sundry. Thar has a population 2 million and 7 million livestock living in 6 talukas namely Diplo, Mithi, Islamkot, Chahcro, Dhali and Nagarparkar. 80% population living in 1,500 villages and 20% population living in 5 major cities need sufficient quantity of purified water for daily consumption. Clean water was not available and people were compelled to consume underground brackish water which resulted in waterborne diseases among the inhabitants.
Pak Oasis having proven track record for installation and operation of desert water schemes is the only company working in Pakistan with technical and financial strength to undertake and complete large projects. Pak Oasis has been working diligently to complete 750 Solar RO plants in 12 months' time. At the moment 300 small village based plants have been installed which will run on solar energy, this number will reach 750 by June 2015. Installation of solarized water filtration plants will eradicate the long unresolved issue of clean drinking water for both humans and animals.
The concept to provide clean drinking water to every village in Thar was conceived in the year 2012 but the hurdle that came in the way of materialising this idea into reality was that of non-provision of electricity, low voltage or no power lines. Subsequently, this problem was overcome by running the plants on generator which was not a very feasible solution considering the cost associated with it. Keeping this important aspect in mind, the decision to solarize the existing plants and future plants was taken. Pak Oasis' engineers especially designed plants which were engineered to run on solar energy. Plants being run on solar energy are not only cost effective but they are able to supply water continuously without any malfunction or anomaly. At the moment 300 small village based plants have been installed which will run on solar energy, this number will reach 750 by June 2015. Installation of solarized water filtration plants will eradicate the long unresolved issue of clean drinking water for both humans and animals. In first phase 315 villages were identified for installation of RO Plant and plant installation was completed within 4 months by Pak Oasis. This is first time that employment and training has given to local educated youth to operate these Solar RO Plants and local trained staff is working on 90% efficiency and running these plants with dedication and a proud sense of ownership.
To meet the water requirement of large towns like Mithi, Nagarparkar and Islamkot, Pak Oasis came up with the solution to put a large sized RO plant with a capacity to produce 2 million gallons of water per day in Misri Shah, Mithi and 1.5 million gallon per day in Islamkot. The solar RO plant at Misri Shah is Asia's largest Solar Hybrid 1 Mega Watt Water Desalination plant with the capacity to produce 2 million gallon of purified water per day.
A solar RO plant installed by Pak Oasis at Subharo Shah in Tharparkar is not only providing clean and safe water to the people there but the purified water from the plant is also being utilised for irrigation to produce vegetables, fruits and fodder.
The people of Thar no longer have to walk miles to fetch water, their families are not suffering from water borne diseases and their livestock is consuming fresh and sweet water and the milk quality is improving which will ultimately give locals the opportunity to earn more. Furthermore the most important thing is that they will not feel the need to move livestock to other regions for water as there will be no shortage of water in Thar. It is expected that thousands of litres of good quality of milk will be available for Thar and each and every house will earn from dairy products and poverty will be eliminated forever and people will live with dignity and pride.
