LAHORE: A Lahore High Court full bench on Monday adjourned hearing of a contempt plea against former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal till September 5.
The three-member bench headed by Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, heard the petition filed by Munir Ahmad against Ahsan Iqbal over his anti-judiciary remarks.
At the outset of hearing, Ahsan Iqbal along with his counsel appeared before the bench and submitted a detailed reply in the case. He also maintained that he respected the judiciary.
Iqbal's lawyer submitted that his client had tendered an unconditional apology in relation to the contempt of court proceedings against him. He pleaded to dispose of the proceedings.
However, the bench did not agree with the request and observed that it would review matter after summer vacation. The bench then adjourned hearing till September 5.
The civil miscellaneous application was filed by Munir Ahmad in a pending petition against anti-judiciary speeches by former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and 16 other leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-N.
The petitioner submitted that Ahsan Iqbal, then interior minister, and former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had used derogatory remarks against the Supreme Court judges on April 25 and 23 respectively, which were aired on TV channels.
He contended that the respondents' action was barred under Article 68 of the Constitution but the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) did not take any action despite being empowered by the PEMRA Ordinance.
He submitted that the authority failed to implement provisions of PEMRA Ordinance and the court orders of April 16, therefore, contempt proceedings should be initiated against the respondents.
